lost early Bukowski publication
In 1946 Bukowski's story
20 Tanks From Kasseldown was published in the prestigious
Portfolio III broadside collection. In his
Portfolio III bio he states that he's only been published twice, in
Story in 1944 (
Aftermath of a Lengthy Rejection Slip), and "a story and poem in 'Write.'---That's it."
If he did have a story and poem published in
Write, they neglected to include it in Dorbin's bibliography of his early publications, and it's very unlikely that either the story or the poem would have been re-worked or reprinted when he began bombarding the little magazines with submissions in the late 50's, early 60's.
Recent research turns up only one magazine named
Write during that time period (full title:
Write; the monthly magazine for amateur writers), and it published only three issues in 1940. If this is the
Write Bukowski is referring to, it would contain his earliest published work, both poetry and prose.
